Healthcare Expertise

TSI has deep healthcare expertise from an operations and technology perspective from a number of perspectives - healthcare provider, healthcare insurance provider, healthcare accreditation and professional organizations.   TSI has  assisted a number of healthcare clients. Listed below are a few examples of our expertise:

  • Large Healthcare Provider -  TSI led the technology strategic planning and transformation project for this organization that had over 5 hospitals and 40 ambulatory/remote locations.  This project resulted in the information collection, analysis and deliverable (referred to as the Key Plan) including:

    •    Define/refine the Mission, Vision and Values as related to the use of technology in the operation and administration of AHC’s business
    •    Define current Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats
    •    Gather, analyze and integrate best practices from leading vendors and industry benchmarking data
    •    Develop a technology direction and an actionable program for change that addresses its areas of development in the context of short, mid and long-term time horizons.
  • Large Healthcare Professional Education and Accreditation Organization - TSI led a project to improve the efficiency and utility of the IT Department including the technology processes, people and infrastructure that supports this $150M organization.   TSI  focused on the IT expenditures and the root causes that drove these to be considerably higher than other organizations.  TSI quantified the number of vendors and disparate software products at over 100 and analyzed how to improve the software capabilities, processes and data quality by adopting more of a vendor centric approach.  TSI quantified the true technology spend and by implementing the recommendations, this client will reduce its technology spend by 50%.
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) - TSI assisted in improving reporting and analysis processes.   On this engagement, TSI performed the following activities:
    •    Overall review of the process for Plan submissions, staff retrieval and completion of requests.
    •    Analysis of the current Quality Assurance process.
    •    Identification of opportunities to simplify and/or improve the processes for producing network reports.
    •    Plan for maintaining turnaround time within standard hours and minimal employee overtime.
    •    Recommendations for enhancing technical and staffing capabilities, as well as quality control procedures.
    •    Recommendations on employee training and an employee training manual.

    While performing the steps above, TSI followed its process improvement methodology and created the following deliverables:
    •    Business Context
    •    As Is Process Flows
    •    As Is Analysis
    •    Ideal or Best Case Scenario Process Flows
    •    Practical Process Flows
    •    Recommendations
    •    Implementation Plan.                                                                                                     This project resulted in significant productivity savings (confidentiality agreement prevents sharing specific details).
  • E-Business Startup (Healthcare) – San Francisco, CA - Defined and facilitated the approach to define this healthcare “dot com” start up company’s e-business service offering and enabling processes and organization structure. Contributed to the Business Plan used to secure venture capital. Created a Functional Prototype to facilitate stakeholder needs and desires which were subsequently manifested in the portal during the launch of this venture;
A number of TSI's consultants (in prior lives) have successfully led the projects listed below:

  • Large Medical Center, Chicago, IL Led a project to improve the collections operations of this 700-bed hospital. Concurrently, TSI also led a 10-person collection project that resulted in over $1 million of cash received in six months from old accounts receivable.
  • National Hospital Alliance, Westchester, IL Conducted Financial and Operational reviews of 5 medical centers across the U.S. Examined the patient and financial processes beginning with outpatient registration, admissions thru billing and collections. Made recommendations to restructure operations to improve speed and quality of registrations/admissions, quality and timeliness of billing to improve overall cash flow. Recommended technology changes to leverage existing technology better or replace their existing patient accounting systems.
  • Employee Assistance Program Provider – Chicago, IL - Led several worksessions to define and analyze several key processes. Made recommendations to improve the quality, cost-effectiveness and speed of the processes. Made numerous technology recommendations to leverage existing technology better as well as implement more functional automation. Also defined a preliminary implementation plan to begin to implement the suggested changes.
  • Large Pharmaceuticals Company, Lake Forest, IL - Architected the overall integration strategy and coordinated the physical freight payment interface integration between SAP, EDI, and freight payment software (CT FreitRater). Creation of High-Level Documents (HLDs) and test decks for development engineers to ensure coding was done accurately. Managed an integration test life-cycle with freight payment users and technical staff. Confirmed unit testing results and coordinated system testing across all interfaces. Sought business user approval and signoff for all tested interfaces. Communicated progress to business users on a daily basis. Coordinated production go-live activities for SAP, EDI, and Freight Payment (CT FreitRater) interfaces. Also involved with BCP planning concerning transition from legacy system to new freight payment system.
